Meet the Digital Learning Student Guide to AI

This blog post introduces our new student-focused resource designed to help learners use AI responsibly, build confidence, and make informed decisions in academic settings.

The CAHS Instructional Design team works to make online teaching and learning smooth and supportive for both students and faculty. From the CAHS Online Course Orientation to Instructor Resources, we aim to create tools that make online instruction more effective, engaging, and accessible.

With AI now part of everyday academic life, we saw an opportunity - and a responsibility - to help students navigate it with confidence and care.

That’s why we created the Digital Learning Student Guide to AI: a resource designed to help students become thoughtful, responsible users of AI - not just skilled operators.

Why This Guide?

We created the guide in collaboration for the School of Sport Sciences, so many examples are drawn from that field—but the core concepts are designed to support students across all disciplines. We also built on a strong foundation, adapting content from the AI-U/1.0 Student Guide to Artificial Intelligence by Elon University and the AAC&U (licensed under Creative Commons CC BY-NC). As a team - instructional designers and graduate service assistants - we revised the content, added new examples, and connected it to WVU’s academic context to make it more relevant and engaging for our students.

This post kicks off a three-part blog series exploring the School of Sport Sciences’ approach to AI in education. Next up: we’ll reintroduce the Discover AI: Instructor’s Guide to Understanding AI resource, which now includes lesson plans and strategies for integrating AI into assignments. We’ll also share a badging opportunity for students to showcase their foundational knowledge of AI.
